Biodiversidade: minha macarronada de cada dia! / Biodiversity: my everyday pasta!

HEY FOREING FRIEND! YOU CAN FIND A ENGLISH VERSION OF THIS TEXT JUST BELOW THIS PORTUGUESE ONE!!

Surely you have already heard it too: they say that our future is to live inside a computer. That we will do everything in the virtual world, that our bodies will be unnecessary.

Is that our future?

Well, I love computers. The evolution of RAM memory, making computers able to process data in an unimaginable speed, is what allows me to do my job: to assemble the genome of the Golden Mussel. If to live inside a computer could or not be our future, I can not guarantee. But if there's anything I can say, looking at the scientific evidence these days, is that regardless of what seems to be the future of the mankind; we will not get there. We won't have time enough.

The special edition published yesterday in the journal Science (Vol. 345, # 6195) called Vanishing Fauna, discusses the growing extinction of species caused by the so-called 'Anthropocene'.

The Anthropocene is the geological age of man. We currently live in the Holocene, which began around 12,000 years after the last glaciation. However, the impact of humanity on planet Earth is so big that today its discussed a geological time only for us. The great concern is that these impacts are so great that they are reducing the rich diversity around us.

Mass extinctions are natural phenomena. It's true. But what the evidence shows is that this seems to be the first time that a single species is the one responsible for the phenomenon.

If you want details, here is one of the Science papers from yesterday. Click here.

In my opinion, the first reason why we should think about how to handle the resources around us would be out of respect for all living species on Earth. We all share the same genetic code, we all come from the same place, we share the same ancestor. It doesn't matter if it is manipulating tools or building nests in trees: all living species today had the same evolutionary success. Although with different evolutionary strategies, we all got here. We all deserve respect.

But okay, let's say you do not care about this "biodiversity thing". So I tell you: if you want to see humans evolve to something new, if you want to see the era of humans inside computers, you have to help lessen the pace of extinctions. Because you can be sure: we will run out of food.

O futebol pode ser mais que pão e circo / Football can be more

HEY FOREING FRIEND! YOU CAN FIND A ENGLISH VERSION OF THIS TEXT JUST BELOW THIS PORTUGUESE ONE!!

Sorrimos, cantamos!

Fora do campo esportivo, meu amigo, se você for preconceituoso, você está fora de moda. E bem desinformado.

* hábitos antigos custam a morrer.

The 'caveman' still lives in us. Worried about their survival in the wild, at the beginnings of mankind, humans behaved violently and competitively. However, our biological makeup assured us a lot of raw material to be developed: in the course of time we were creating new neural connections, learning how to use tools, learning to teach and so, we developed the languages, cultures, philosophies.

The cultural world men has created and where we live in now is wonderful: even though being only organized star dust and a small fraction of the universe, men has the ability to look and see their surroundings; we are aware of our presence in the universe and we have even explored other galaxies. We also created agriculture and medicine that exponentially increased our population on earth, and also increased our longevity. However, old habits die hard and we are still a very competitive species.

If we want to maintain our culture, our most human and social side, we have to use sports as our battlefield: while holding a shirt and supporting the players of our team, we release a lot of energy. There, in the sports fields, we can compete. And at the end, we go home smiling or shouting, but our differences end there.

Outside the sports field, my friend, if you are prejudiced, you are out of fashion. And just uninformed. Because science has shown that we are all equals: our genomes are 99% identical; Brazilians, Argentines or Germans.

And Palestinians and Jews.

Right now, in the Middle East, there is a serious international crisis: Israel is bombing Gaza, claiming that Palestinians (in fact, just the extremist group Hamas) kidnapped and killed three Israeli teenagers. Palestinians retaliated. They can’t get along. The fight between Israelis and Palestinians has lasted decades, and is marked by religious intolerance and violence.

But also by the presence of much persevering people working to change that. My friend Aziz Abu Sarah, a National Geographic explorer and passionate about football, he came to Brazil to enjoy the world cup and also to learn a bit about our culture. Some time ago, Aziz has held a meeting between Jewish and Palestinian children in the Middle East, and put them to play football. Click here and check.

Amazing, right? When the football started they were all equals.

Final consideration: This text didn’t have the intention to say Brazilian and international football are not marked by serious problems. They are. This text is not about CBF neither FIFA, both institutions that really need urgent reforms. These words wanted to talk about tolerance and hope. If humans really want to be that ‘civilized species’ as they like to call themselves, we have to leave this world of violence and competition aside. We can’t? You say it’s biological? Ok: let use the sports fields as our stage of competition!

Speacking of that: try again in for years, Argentina!!
